Yes, and for most people learning here that is the practical option. Moorabbin Airport is a working estate rather than housing, so driving lessons are usually collected from a workplace or the retail centre. For drive test preparation we would suggest meeting at Heatherton VicRoads instead.

About 5.5 kilometres, or roughly 12 minutes in ordinary traffic heading north west. The estate is compact, so the time of day makes more difference to that figure than where you start.

Outside trading hours, yes, and only then. They are wide, well marked and quiet in the mornings and early in the week, which suits a beginner. On a busy trading day the same roads are among the more demanding driving in the area, so we choose the hour as carefully as the route.

Patience and anticipation. Car park queues back out onto through roads, drivers reverse out of bays without looking and turning traffic never stops. Learning to slow early and expect someone to do something unexpected is exactly what the drive test pays attention to.

For the first driving lesson or two. A big car park is a reasonable place to get used to the pedals and the steering, but it teaches you nothing about judging a kerbside gap between parked cars on a street, which is what the drive test asks. We move onto real streets quickly.

Yes, and they are the most valuable part of learning here. Grange Road, Centre Dandenong Road and Boundary Road are multi-lane and busy, so they ask for lane discipline and turns set up well ahead, which is much closer to the roads around Heatherton VicRoads.

No, and they should not. The estate teaches car park judgement and patience and very little about ordinary residential driving. The drive test is conducted on streets with parked cars, pedestrians and side roads, so we move onto that kind of road well before test day.

On the residential streets just off the estate, where cars are parked along the kerb in a normal line. The estate has marked bays and enormous car parks, which is a different exercise entirely from what the drive test assesses.

Automatic. Driving lessons at Moorabbin Airport are in a small dual-control automatic, and that is also the car you would sit the Heatherton VicRoads drive test in if your package includes it. An automatic licence covers you for automatic cars, which is what most people in Melbourne drive now.
