Heatherton VicRoads has several testing routes, and they cross much of the same ground. We teach them all, along with the black spots and the intersections that ask the most of you. The drive starts and finishes at the office on Corporate Drive, and the routes run through multi-lane roads including the 70km/h Warrigal Road and the 80km/h South Road extension, a two-lane stretch, plus roundabouts and an industrial estate with frequent stop-sign intersections once you cross Warrigal Road. It is straightforward once you have practised these actual conditions with a driving instructor who knows them well. The VicRoads test route itself takes about 30 minutes, plus your pre-drive check beforehand. There is administration to allow for at both ends, checking in before the drive and the photo and licence after a pass. Peak hour traffic in particular can add to how long the appointment runs.

It applies to the serious matters, among them exceeding the limit by 5 km/h or more, driving through a stop sign or red light, failing to give way so another road user must take evasive action, mounting the kerb while driving, and any verbal or physical assistance from your driving instructor or the testing officer. An ITE concludes the test there, though these are exactly the areas that repetition during driving lessons takes care of.

Noticing and adjusting to posted speed zones is where most students benefit from extra work, especially the 40 km/h school and roadworks zones. Because it's a habit rather than a talent, regular practice in driving lessons makes it stick.

No set figure exists. The result comes from three things considered together:

• An immediate termination error (ITE) ends the drive at that point.
• Critical errors are noted as the drive progresses. Up to one in Stage 1, or two across the whole test, still leaves you placed to pass.
• Smaller errors on individual tasks are logged as well, so a consistent drive from start to finish counts for more than any one moment.

You are with the same driving instructor throughout, in the same car. That is deliberate. Your instructor knows exactly where you are up to and what to work on next, so nothing is wasted re-establishing that. And driving the one car all the way through means you are never adjusting to an unfamiliar vehicle on test day.

No. Parking sits alongside several other assessed manoeuvres, and struggling with it isn't decisive on its own. It also improves markedly with practice, and most students move from apprehensive to comfortable within a few driving lessons. Worth knowing that one wheel mounting the kerb while parking or leaving a park is recorded as a critical error, while mounting it as you drive along is an immediate termination error.

Judgement calls under pressure tend to be the area: choosing gaps, reading hazards early and committing at intersections. They're about confidence more than technique, and practice on the VicRoads testing routes builds that quickly, especially in a lesson close to test day.

It depends on the situation. One wheel up the kerb during a park, or while leaving it, counts as a critical error, whereas mounting the kerb while driving counts as an immediate termination error. Accurate positioning is part of the assessment regardless, and it's something your driving instructor builds with you.
