Mitcham VicRoads has several testing routes. Our driving instructors teach every one, along with the black spots and the intersections that need real care. The drive starts and finishes at the office on Heatherdale Road in Ringwood, and the early part works through the quieter residential backstreets just east of it, where speed bumps and narrow corridors keep the pace down. From there the routes take in Maroondah Highway, Canterbury Road, Whitehorse Road, Wantirna Road and Boronia Road, all multi-lane and all asking for confident lane changes, with Canterbury Road stepping between 80 km/h and 60 km/h along the way. The residential blocks carry a lot of stop signs and a lot of uncontrolled intersections with no line markings at all, where give way to the right is doing the work, and the school zones through the area mean the speed keeps adjusting the whole way round. It is all familiar once you have driven it.

The VicRoads test route itself takes about 30 minutes, plus your pre-drive check beforehand. Time is needed at both ends for administration, checking in beforehand and, on a pass, the photo and licence afterwards. How long the appointment takes also depends on traffic, peak hour most of all.

Focus on driving lessons on the actual VicRoads testing routes for your test centre, learn the stage one and stage two format, and practise until observation, speed control and manoeuvres like parking and three-point turns feel automatic rather than something you have to think about.

Formally, an instant fail is an immediate termination error (ITE). It covers the more serious matters, such as excessive speeding, not stopping at a stop sign, not obeying a red light, or mounting or striking a kerb, and an ITE concludes the test at that point. They are all very learnable.

The area needing the most attention is usually speed zone awareness, especially the 40 km/h school and roadworks zones. It's entirely learnable, and your driving instructor works on it consistently across your driving lessons.

It's not a fixed tally. Three elements decide the outcome:

• An immediate termination error (ITE) finishes the test at that point.
• Critical errors are noted through the drive. Up to one in Stage 1, or two across the test overall, still leaves you placed to pass.
• Smaller errors on individual tasks are counted as well, so an even drive across the whole route matters more than a single moment.

Consistency in the car matters as well. By the end you know its size and its biting point without thinking about either.

No. It's one of a number of manoeuvres assessed, and difficulty with parking alone doesn't determine your result. It's also very responsive to teaching, and clear steps with reference points usually turn it into a routine task within a few driving lessons. The caveat is the kerb: mounting it at any point during the test is an immediate termination error, and a parallel park is a likely spot for it.

Decisions under pressure are the common one: judging gaps, picking up hazards early and committing at intersections. Confidence matters more than technique here, and it develops fast with practice on the VicRoads testing routes.

How hard you hit it matters. Brushing the kerb lightly is not an immediate termination error, whereas mounting or striking it can be. Positioning during parking and turns is assessed regardless, and it's worked on directly during your driving lessons.
