For over 35 years, Alex Driving School has helped thousands of learner drivers and overseas drivers across Melbourne, including many testing at Mitcham VicRoads, work towards their Ps or convert an overseas licence to a Victorian driver licence.

Our accredited driving instructors provide one-to-one driving lessons, dedicated Mitcham VicRoads test preparation and practical feedback designed to build confidence, use driving lesson time efficiently and improve your chance of a first-time pass.

02

Parking Made Simple

Parallel parking often brings learners and overseas drivers to book a lesson before attempting their Mitcham VicRoads test.

Parking becomes repeatable when taught as steps, and we cover positioning, steering, reference points and observations. Three-point turns and other low-speed work are covered too, so you approach them with confidence.

03

Overseas Licence Conversion Driving Lessons in Mitcham

Overseas drivers converting to a Victorian driver licence often need focused preparation rather than many driving lessons. We help you adjust to Mitcham's roads, Victorian road rules and the VicRoads drive test format.

Meeting at Mitcham VicRoads and preparing in a familiar automatic driving instructor car keeps more driving lesson time focused on the real testing conditions, assessment criteria and the skills needed to aim for a first-time pass.

04

Get Your Ps in Mitcham

Advancing from learner status to provisional requires proper tuition and solid feedback, rather than simply meeting hour requirements.

Your driving instructor tracks your progress toward the Mitcham VicRoads drive test and gives you good advice on what to work on next, so each driving lesson builds on the one before it.

05

How Many Driving Lessons Will You Need?

Learner drivers typically start with 5 to 10 one-to-one lessons before continuing supervised practice. Learners reaching or completing their 120 hours often book 3 to 5 focused driving lessons for the Mitcham VicRoads drive test.

Overseas drivers with experience usually require 2 to 5 focused driving lessons, depending on how well they know Melbourne. From the first driving lesson your instructor can confirm the preparation plan.

06

Meeting at Mitcham VicRoads for Drive Test Preparation

Alex Driving School Mitcham can pick you up from home, work or Mitcham VicRoads, 93A Heatherdale Road, Ringwood, whichever suits you best. When you're preparing for your drive test, meeting at Mitcham VicRoads is recommended, especially for overseas licence conversion students and learners who have already completed their 120 hours.

Mitcham VicRoads draws on more than one testing route. Meeting at the office means the driving lesson begins on them rather than finishing up there, and the roads and intersections the routes share are what the preparation is built around. It also costs less.

07

What to Expect on Mitcham VicRoads Test Day

Your test-day booking is the last lesson of your package, or your individual lesson, conducted on one of the actual testing routes. Documents in at the counter, then back to the car for the pre-drive check before stage one. If everything goes well, you move on to stage two, covering the busier connecting roads near the office, before returning to Mitcham VicRoads.

08

Speed Zones and the Drive Test: We've Got You

Speed control is one of the biggest parts of the VicRoads test. School zones drop to 40km/h during signed hours, and roadworks zones drop to 40km/h too. Both are simple to get wrong and hard to recover from, so zone awareness matters as much as hazard perception.

Speed awareness is drilled each driving lesson until instinctive: read the signs, adjust ahead of time, never guess. Speed is one thing that has to be right on the day, so we make sure it is covered.

09

No Guarantees, No Gimmicks at Mitcham VicRoads

Some driving schools around Mitcham advertise a guaranteed licence or a free retest. Study the terms and you see the guarantee depends entirely on completing the test. Scarcely any failed test finishes. It ends at an immediate termination error or too many critical errors, and the schools advertising guarantees know that. Completing the route means you have most probably passed. So the promise applies to the outcome that never needed one, and not to any outcome that did. Only a VicRoads testing officer decides the result.

Alex Driving School focuses on practical driving lessons and honest feedback on the real Mitcham testing conditions, so your driving lessons are spent where it counts.

10

Confident Lane Changes and Head Checks

Moving between quieter suburban streets and the busier main roads near the office means changing speed and adjusting your lane position more than once on the same drive. Knowing exactly when a zone changes, and being decisive about it, matters just as much as watching for hazards.

Mitcham testing officers also specifically look for a head check alongside every mirror check before you change lanes or turn. A mirror glance on its own isn't enough. We build the head check in as a habit, not an afterthought.

11

Refresher Driving Lessons in Mitcham

Licensed drivers seeking to refine their abilities can book refresher lessons to rebuild confidence and adjust to current Mitcham traffic conditions, including roundabouts and busier connecting roads.

What you want to work on sets the agenda: parking, lane changes, busy intersections or general road confidence.

12

Occupational Therapist Driving Assessments

Driving lessons and vehicle support may be available for clients completing an occupational therapist driving assessment in the Mitcham area.

It comes down to the assessment location, driving instructor availability and vehicle requirements. Contact Alex Driving School before booking.

Not for every lesson. We can pick you up from home, work or your local train station. If you're preparing for your test, meeting at Mitcham VicRoads is strongly recommended so lesson time is spent on the actual test conditions. For a one-lesson-and-test booking, the lesson and test run back-to-back on test day starting at Mitcham VicRoads, for the best price and best results.

Mitcham VicRoads has several testing routes. Our driving instructors teach every one, along with the black spots and the intersections that need real care. The drive starts and finishes at the office on Heatherdale Road in Ringwood, and the early part works through the quieter residential backstreets just east of it, where speed bumps and narrow corridors keep the pace down. From there the routes take in Maroondah Highway, Canterbury Road, Whitehorse Road, Wantirna Road and Boronia Road, all multi-lane and all asking for confident lane changes, with Canterbury Road stepping between 80 km/h and 60 km/h along the way. The residential blocks carry a lot of stop signs and a lot of uncontrolled intersections with no line markings at all, where give way to the right is doing the work, and the school zones through the area mean the speed keeps adjusting the whole way round. It is all familiar once you have driven it.

The VicRoads test route itself takes about 30 minutes, plus your pre-drive check beforehand. Time is needed at both ends for administration, checking in beforehand and, on a pass, the photo and licence afterwards. How long the appointment takes also depends on traffic, peak hour most of all.

For overseas licence conversion, we recommend an automatic car at Mitcham VicRoads. It takes gear changes out, leaving observation and hazard response to focus on.

No, ours included, and the fine print is worth your attention. A licence guarantee applies only if you complete the test. Almost every failed test ends before that point, through an immediate termination error or too many critical errors, and that is well known to the schools making the offer. Finish the route and you have very likely passed anyway. The guarantee covers the one result that needed nothing. An independent VicRoads testing officer decides it, so we concentrate on preparing you well on the Mitcham VicRoads testing routes and being straight with you.

Yes. We can collect and drop off at home, work or your train station. If you're preparing for your VicRoads drive test, we strongly recommend meeting at Mitcham VicRoads instead, so your lesson time is spent on the real testing routes.

Focus on driving lessons on the actual VicRoads testing routes for your test centre, learn the stage one and stage two format, and practise until observation, speed control and manoeuvres like parking and three-point turns feel automatic rather than something you have to think about.

Formally, an instant fail is an immediate termination error (ITE). It covers the more serious matters, such as excessive speeding, not stopping at a stop sign, not obeying a red light, or mounting or striking a kerb, and an ITE concludes the test at that point. They are all very learnable.

The area needing the most attention is usually speed zone awareness, especially the 40 km/h school and roadworks zones. It's entirely learnable, and your driving instructor works on it consistently across your driving lessons.

It's not a fixed tally. Three elements decide the outcome:

  • An immediate termination error (ITE) finishes the test at that point.
  • Critical errors are noted through the drive. Up to one in Stage 1, or two across the test overall, still leaves you placed to pass.
  • Smaller errors on individual tasks are counted as well, so an even drive across the whole route matters more than a single moment.

All of this is covered in your driving lessons. Our VicRoads Drive Test Guide breaks it down further.

Same driving instructor, same car. We keep it that way on purpose, because an instructor who has taught every one of your lessons knows your progress and can pitch the next one properly. Consistency in the car matters as well. By the end you know its size and its biting point without thinking about either.

No. It's one of a number of manoeuvres assessed, and difficulty with parking alone doesn't determine your result. It's also very responsive to teaching, and clear steps with reference points usually turn it into a routine task within a few driving lessons. The caveat is the kerb: mounting it at any point during the test is an immediate termination error, and a parallel park is a likely spot for it.

Decisions under pressure are the common one: judging gaps, picking up hazards early and committing at intersections. Confidence matters more than technique here, and it develops fast with practice on the VicRoads testing routes.

How hard you hit it matters. Brushing the kerb lightly is not an immediate termination error, whereas mounting or striking it can be. Positioning during parking and turns is assessed regardless, and it's worked on directly during your driving lessons.
