Bundoora VicRoads has several testing routes. Our driving instructors know them and teach them, including the black spots and the intersections that need the most care. The drive starts and finishes at the office on Graduate Road, inside the University Hill estate, where the limit is 40 km/h rather than the 50 km/h the wide roads suggest, and the early part loops through Scholar Drive and Enterprise Drive with pedestrians about. From there the routes open onto Plenty Road, a multi-lane arterial with trams running along it, plus McKimmies Road and Betula Avenue, where traffic moves at 60 km/h and above and the slip lanes ask you to build speed within the lane rather than stopping at the end of it. None of it is unfamiliar once you have driven it with a driving instructor who knows the routes.

The VicRoads test route itself takes about 30 minutes, plus your pre-drive check beforehand. Leave extra time on both sides for the VicRoads paperwork: checking in beforehand, and afterwards, if you pass, the photo and the licence itself. Traffic adds to it as well, particularly at peak hour, so the appointment can run longer.

It covers the more serious matters, such as excessive speeding, not stopping at a stop sign, not obeying a red light, or mounting or striking a kerb. An ITE concludes the test at that point, which is why your driving instructor makes sure these are second nature long before you book.

Speed zone awareness is the area most students need to sharpen, particularly the 40 km/h school and roadworks zones. It's a learnable skill rather than a knack, which is why speed awareness features in every driving lesson from the very first session.

There's no single figure. Three things combine to decide the result:

• An immediate termination error (ITE) concludes the test at that point.
• Critical errors are noted as you drive. Up to one in Stage 1, or two across the whole test, still leaves you placed to pass.
• Smaller errors on individual tasks are recorded too, so steady driving across the whole route counts for more than any single moment.

It is how we prefer to run it, because your instructor knows where you finished last lesson and what to build on next, so none of your hour goes on covering old ground. The car matters just as much: once its size, mirrors and biting point are familiar, the car stops being something you have to think about.

No. Parking is one of several manoeuvres assessed, and finding it difficult doesn't decide the outcome by itself. It's also among the most improvable skills there is: taught as clear steps with reference points, most students go from dreading it to finding it routine within a few driving lessons. Worth knowing: mounting the kerb anywhere in the drive is an immediate termination error, and a parallel park is one of the moments where that can occur.

Decision-making under pressure: judging gaps, reading hazards early and committing at intersections. These are confidence skills more than technical ones, and they improve markedly with repetition on the VicRoads testing routes, which is exactly why a driving lesson on those routes shortly before test day makes such a difference.

That depends on the severity. A light brush against the kerb is not an immediate termination error, though mounting or striking it can be. Positioning during parking and turns is assessed regardless, and it's something your driving instructor works on with you until it feels natural.
