Carlton VicRoads has several testing routes and they cover much of the same ground. We know them and teach them, along with the difficult intersections and the black spots. The drive starts and finishes at the office on Lygon Street, and the early part works through the Carlton grid, the tight residential blocks around Rathdowne Street, Drummond Street, Princes Street and Story Street, where the streets are narrow, cars are parked along both sides and many intersections carry no stop or give way markings at all, so the give way to the right rule is doing the work. From there the routes open onto the busier corridors, Lygon Street, Grattan Street, Elgin Street and Swanston Street, where the limit moves between 40 km/h and 60 km/h, trams run alongside you and stop to let passengers off, cyclists are constant, and Elgin Street brings roundabouts and give way decisions in quick succession. It is straightforward once you have practised these actual streets with a driving instructor who knows them well. The VicRoads test route itself takes about 30 minutes, plus your pre-drive check beforehand. Add time either end for VicRoads administration. You check in before the drive, and if you pass, the photo and licence follow afterwards. Peak hour traffic can stretch the appointment out further still.

For overseas licence conversion, we recommend an automatic car at Carlton VicRoads. Taking gear changes out leaves you free to concentrate on observation and hazards.

No driving school can. Read the fine print on a licence guarantee and you find it holds only if you complete the test. Almost every failed test ends before then, through an immediate termination error or too many critical errors, which the schools offering these guarantees are well aware of. Reach the end and you have very likely passed regardless. The guarantee therefore covers the one result that never required it. Focus on driving lessons on the actual VicRoads testing routes for your test centre, learn the stage one and stage two format, and practise until observation, speed control and manoeuvres like parking and three-point turns feel automatic rather than something you have to think about.

It's formally known as an immediate termination error (ITE). It covers the more serious matters, such as excessive speeding, not stopping at a stop sign, not obeying a red light, or mounting or striking a kerb. Your driving instructor will have you comfortable with all of them well ahead of test day.

Reading speed zones accurately is what most learners need to work on, especially the 40 km/h school and roadworks zones. There's nothing mysterious about it, and consistent practice makes it automatic, so it's built into every driving lesson we run.

No fixed number applies. The outcome rests on three things working together:

• An immediate termination error (ITE) brings the test to a close at that point.
• Critical errors are noted as you drive. Up to one in Stage 1, or two across the whole test, still leaves you well placed to pass.
• Smaller errors on individual tasks are recorded as well, so consistency across the full route matters more than any one moment.

You keep the same driving instructor, and the same car, as a matter of course. Your instructor carries your progress from one lesson to the next rather than starting cold each time, so the hour is spent moving forward. Sticking with one car helps for the same reason. By test day its size and its biting point are second nature.

No. Parking is just one of the manoeuvres assessed, and struggling with it doesn't settle the result on its own. It also improves faster than almost anything else. With clear steps and reference points, most learners find it becomes routine after a handful of driving lessons. Kerbs are the one caveat. Mounting one at any stage of the drive is an immediate termination error, and a parallel park is a likely place for it.

Judgement under pressure is the usual one: choosing gaps, spotting hazards early and committing at intersections. These come down to confidence rather than technique, and they sharpen quickly with practice on the VicRoads testing routes, which is why a lesson there shortly before test day helps so much.

It comes down to how heavy the contact is. Brushing the kerb lightly is not an immediate termination error, but mounting or striking it can be. Precise positioning through parking and turns is assessed either way, and it's a direct focus in your driving lessons.
