Driving Lessons Prahran

Carlton VicRoads, at 459 Lygon Street, Carlton. It is about 8.5 kilometres north west of Prahran, roughly twenty minutes through the city, and it is where your driving instructor will prepare you and where your drive test is booked.

It does not conduct drive tests. The office is open and handles other VicRoads business, so it is worth knowing about for everything else, but your drive test from Prahran is at Carlton VicRoads.

Because the route runs up through the city rather than around it. Trams stopping, signals, pedestrians and right turns that have to wait all add up. It is normal for this part of Melbourne, and the useful part is that those are the same conditions as the roads around the testing office.

Yes for ordinary learner driving lessons, and pickup from home, work or Prahran station is completely normal. For drive test preparation, twenty minutes each way is most of a 60 minute driving lesson, so we would rather meet you at Carlton VicRoads or run a 90 minute driving lesson.

When you are ready we bring in one tram road at a time rather than all three at once. It becomes ordinary faster than most people expect.

It is demanding for the first couple of driving lessons and an advantage from then on. Narrow one way streets teach car width, route planning and patience all at once, at speeds where nothing goes wrong. Learners who start on wide roads usually find exactly this the hardest thing to add later.

It is heavy and worth practising deliberately. Commercial Road around the market and the hospital brings pedestrians, taxis stopping without warning and vehicles pulling out, which is about as much as any inner suburban road asks of a driver. We choose the hour rather than avoiding the street.

It is one of the most demanding places we teach and it produces very confident city drivers. Three tram routes, one way streets, loading zones and heavy pedestrian traffic mean almost nothing you meet afterwards feels harder than what you learned on.

Everywhere, and finding a space is half the exercise. Cars are parked along both sides of nearly every residential street, so real reverse parallel parking gaps are always close by and usually tight. Around Chapel Street and the market is the version with a tram behind you and someone waiting, and we save that until the quieter streets have stopped needing any thought.
