Unusually good, and only for a while. The estate roads are wide, well marked and quiet outside business hours, which is close to ideal for a first driving lesson. What they do not give you is traffic, and the drive test is conducted in traffic, so a sensible plan uses the estate at the start and moves onto the arterials well before test day.

Yes, and they are the most valuable part of learning here. Both are multi-lane, Mount Alexander Road has trams, and both ask for lane discipline and turns set up well before the intersection. They are the closest thing nearby to the conditions the drive test is run in.

For the first driving lesson or two, and not much beyond that. A big car park is a fine place to get used to the pedals and the steering, but it teaches you almost nothing about judging a real gap between parked cars on a street, which is what a drive test actually asks for. We move onto real streets quickly for that reason.

On the residential streets just off the estate, where cars are parked along the kerb in a normal line. The estate itself has plenty of parking bays and very few of the kerbside gaps the drive test asks you to judge, so we go a few streets out for that part of the driving lessons.

Effectively yes, in everyday use. Essendon Fields is the estate built around the airport and it covers the commercial and retail areas as well as the airfield itself. For driving lessons it makes no difference which name you use when you book, as long as we know which entrance to meet you at.

Automatic. Driving lessons at Essendon Fields are in a small dual-control automatic, and that is also the car you would sit the Coolaroo VicRoads drive test in if your package includes it. An automatic licence covers you for automatic cars, which is what most people in Melbourne drive now. If you specifically need manual, tell us when you book and we will give you an honest answer on whether we can cover it.
