Heatherton, and the reason is the clock rather than the map. Carlton VicRoads is actually the nearer office at about 12 kilometres against Heatherton's 13.1, but the run into the city takes closer to 29 minutes where Heatherton is about 22. Elsternwick is one of the few suburbs where nearest and quickest are different offices, and when they disagree the time is what counts, both on test day and in every driving lesson before it.

Yes, for ordinary driving lessons. Home, work or Elsternwick station all work. For drive test preparation we would suggest meeting at Heatherton VicRoads instead, or booking a 90 minute driving lesson, because at 22 minutes each way the travel would take most of a 60 minute booking.

Yes, when you are ready, and it is one of the more useful roads in Melbourne to learn on. Glen Huntly Road has trams down the centre, cars pulling in and out of parking along the whole strip and pedestrians crossing between them. There is nothing mysterious about any of it once you have been shown where to position the car, and doing that with a driving instructor beside you is a great deal better than working it out alone after the test.

The residential streets between Glen Huntly Road and Glen Eira Road, including the blocks around Rippon Lea and the streets running down towards Elster Creek. Wide enough to be forgiving for a first driving lesson, with enough parked cars to start building judgement of space.

It comes later in the order. Nepean Highway forms the western edge of Elsternwick and is multi-lane and quick, so it asks for lane discipline and gaps chosen well ahead. We build up to it rather than starting there, and it is worth covering properly because the roads around Heatherton VicRoads ask for the same skills.

Yes. Elsternwick station is a common meeting point for driving lessons, along with home and work. It suits anyone travelling in for a driving lesson rather than starting from an Elsternwick address. For drive test preparation we would still suggest Heatherton VicRoads instead.

On the residential streets either side of Glen Huntly Road, where there are real gaps between parked cars. Once that is solid, the shopping strip itself is the harder version and worth doing before test day. Your driving instructor picks streets that suit your stage rather than starting you on the tightest gap in the suburb.

Automatic. Driving lessons in Elsternwick are in a small dual-control automatic, and that is also the car you would sit the Heatherton VicRoads drive test in if your package includes it. An automatic licence covers you for automatic cars, which is what most people in Melbourne drive now.
