01New Learner Drivers

Driving Lessons in Preston for New Learner Drivers

Preston is a big established suburb with tram routes on two of its main roads and a market at the centre of it, which gives a beginner an unusually complete range without going anywhere. We keep beginners off High Street, Plenty Road and Bell Street. The residential grid behind them is where a first driving lesson belongs.

From there it builds in an order: vehicle control and observation on the quiet residential streets near you, then parking between real cars, then the busier roads once you are ready for them rather than once the lesson plan says so. Driving lessons are one to one in a small dual-control automatic, which is what most learner drivers now sit the VicRoads drive test in. It is the same driving instructor and the same car right through to test day.

  • Complete beginners start in the residential grid of Preston, away from High Street and Plenty Road
  • Private one-to-one driving lessons, with nobody else in the car
  • Progress at your pace towards your red or green Ps, not to a fixed schedule

From Ls to Ps in Preston: Driving Lessons as You Approach 120 Hours

For Preston learner drivers with 120 hours logged, or close, and a genuine choice of testing office.

Preston sits almost exactly between two offices, and the driving lessons follow whichever you book. We would lean to the Bundoora VicRoads testing routes, about thirteen minutes up Plenty Road, because Carlton VicRoads is the same distance south but closer to twenty minutes in traffic. Either way it is usually 3 to 5 focused driving lessons: your driving instructor checks your current skill level, works the difficult intersections on those routes, gauges your progress between driving lessons and gives good advice.

  • Usually 3 to 5 focused driving lessons, whichever office you book
  • Bundoora VicRoads is 7.8 kilometres north east, about 13 minutes
  • Carlton VicRoads is a similar distance, slower in traffic

03Overseas Licence Conversion

Overseas Licence Conversion in Preston

If you have driven for years overseas, the driving is rarely the difficulty. It is the Victorian road rules, and around Preston it is tram rules on two main roads, a heavy cross-town arterial, and market traffic that changes the streets completely on the busy days.

Preston is a fair introduction to both. The residential streets mean giving way at intersections with no line markings at all. Parking is tight everywhere. Most overseas licence holders need fewer driving lessons than they expect.

  • Victorian road rules, tram rules and cross-town arterial turns
  • Two to three, three to five or five to ten driving lessons, matched to your driving in Melbourne
  • Drive test preparation at Bundoora VicRoads, with our car on the day

04VicRoads Driving Test

Drive Test Preparation at Bundoora VicRoads

Preston sits almost exactly between two VicRoads offices, so you have a genuine choice. Bundoora VicRoads is about 7.8 kilometres north east and roughly 13 minutes. Carlton VicRoads is a near identical distance south towards the city and takes closer to twenty minutes. We would book Bundoora, and the reason is time rather than distance, but either is available to you.

Preparation covers the shape of the test itself: the pre-drive check at the car, stage one on the quieter streets with a parking manoeuvre or a three-point turn, then stage two on the busier main roads where lane changes are assessed. It also covers the things that end tests early, so you know what a critical error and an immediate termination error actually are before someone is sitting beside you marking them. Your driving instructor can be there on test day, in the same car you have been learning in.

  • The two stages of the VicRoads drive test, and what each one is looking for
  • Parking and three-point turns practised on real Preston streets, not an empty car park

Your Testing Office

Where Do You Sit Your Drive Test From Preston?

The short answer, and what it means for how your driving lessons are arranged.

01

Bundoora VicRoads

Learner drivers in Preston can test at either of two offices, which is unusual and worth knowing before anything is booked. Bundoora VicRoads, 8 Graduate Road, is about thirteen minutes north east and is the one we would book. Carlton VicRoads, 459 Lygon Street, is barely any further in kilometres but the run south into city traffic takes closer to twenty minutes. If your days are already spent in town, that extra time can still be the right trade. Your driving instructor will confirm which suits you.

Driving lessons work the roads around that office, so by test day the intersections, the speed zones and the traffic are already familiar rather than new.

02

Two Offices, and Why We Pick One

From Preston it is about 7.8 kilometres to Bundoora VicRoads, 8 Graduate Road, roughly 13 minutes north east. Carlton VicRoads at 459 Lygon Street is almost exactly the same distance the other way, but heading south the traffic thickens the closer to the city you get, so it takes closer to twenty minutes. Nearly identical kilometres, a real difference in time.

Either way it is thirteen to twenty minutes each way, which is at least half of a 60 minute driving lesson. So from Preston, drive test preparation starts at whichever office you have booked, or runs as a 90 minute driving lesson. The choice is worth making deliberately rather than by default, because the two offices sit in opposite directions.

03

Pickup From Preston

Preston sits outside the ten minute mark whichever office you choose, so for drive test preparation we would ask you to meet your driving instructor at Bundoora VicRoads, 8 Graduate Road, or at Carlton VicRoads if that is the one you have booked. A 90 minute driving lesson is the alternative and absorbs the travel properly. For ordinary learner driving lessons, pickup from home, work or Preston station is completely normal.

Your driving instructor stays with you on test day and you sit the test in the same dual-control car you have been learning in.

04

Your Driving Instructor

Our driving instructors live in the areas they teach in and specialise at the VicRoads office serving them, so your Preston driving instructor already knows the Bundoora VicRoads testing routes rather than learning them alongside you.

Every driving lesson is one to one in a small dual-control automatic, and it is the same instructor and the same car right through to test day.

06Local Driving Lessons & VicRoads Test Preparation

Learn on Preston Roads. Prepare for the Bundoora VicRoads Drive Test.

Preston runs from Bell Street north towards Reservoir, with High Street carrying the 86 tram up the eastern side, Gilbert Road carrying the 11 on the west, and Plenty Road heading north east out of the suburb. Preston Market sits behind Murray Road, Miller Street and Cramer Street cross the middle, and the residential grid fills everything in between.

New learner drivers: where we start

Not on High Street, and not on Plenty Road. First driving lessons use the residential grid between the two tram roads, where the streets are wide for their age, the corners are square and there is room to stop and start again. Preston has a great deal of that kind of street, so the early driving lessons never begin with a drive to somewhere better.

Experienced learners: where we go next

Murray Street and the roads around the market next, where parked cars, people crossing and delivery vehicles make the work observation rather than car control, and where the busy market days are worth meeting on purpose. Then the tram roads. High Street carries the 86 and Gilbert Road the 11, so tram stops, knowing when you may pass and holding a lane beside a tram all come up properly. Bell Street and Plenty Road come last, both multi-lane and busy, and both asking for gap selection and turning right across traffic.

The run to your testing office

Bundoora VicRoads sits about 7.8 kilometres north east at 8 Graduate Road, roughly thirteen minutes out Plenty Road. Carlton VicRoads is a similar distance south and slower in traffic, which is why we lean north unless your week points you at the city. Either way the travel is worth planning around, so meeting your driving instructor at the office, or booking a 90 minute driving lesson, keeps the hour on the roads that matter.

Our accredited driving instructors provide one-to-one driving lessons around Preston, preparation on the Bundoora VicRoads testing routes and practical feedback designed to build confidence, use lesson time efficiently and improve your chance of a first-time pass.

02

Parallel Parking Made Simple

Parallel parking is one of the most common reasons Preston learner drivers and overseas licence holders book a driving lesson before their VicRoads driving test.

Our driving instructors teach parking as clear, repeatable steps, including positioning, steering, reference points and observations. We also practise three-point turns and other low-speed manoeuvres so you can approach them with confidence instead of guesswork.

03

Overseas Licence Conversion Driving Lessons in Preston

Overseas drivers converting to a Victorian driver licence often need focused preparation rather than many driving lessons. If you have moved to Preston from overseas, driving lessons start on the streets around where you live and build out to the wider Melbourne roads, Victorian road rules and the Bundoora VicRoads drive test format.

Meeting at Bundoora VicRoads and preparing in a familiar automatic driving instructor car keeps more lesson time focused on the roads around that office, the assessment criteria and the skills needed to aim for a first-time pass.

04

How Many Driving Lessons Will You Need?

New learner drivers generally begin with 5 to 10 one-to-one driving lessons before continuing supervised practice. Learners approaching or completing their 120 hours usually book 3 to 5 focused driving lessons for the VicRoads drive test.

Experienced overseas drivers commonly begin with 2 to 5 focused driving lessons, depending on their Preston and Melbourne driving experience. The first driving lesson helps your driving instructor confirm the most suitable preparation plan.

05

Should You Meet at VicRoads for Drive Test Preparation?

When a student is preparing for a VicRoads drive test, it is usually best to meet the driving instructor directly at Bundoora VicRoads. This is especially important for overseas licence conversion students and learners who have already completed their 120 hours.

Meeting at VicRoads means more driving lesson time is spent on relevant testing roads. It also reduces wasted travel time and helps keep the overall cost of preparation lower.

06

Driving Instructors Serving Preston

People often search for driving instructors, driver training or driving teachers in Preston when they want patient and reliable help. Alex Driving School instructors are accredited, experienced and supportive.

The goal is not only to pass the drive test. The goal is to build safe habits that continue after the student receives a Victorian driver licence.

07

Why Use Your Driving Instructor's Car for the Drive Test?

Completing your VicRoads drive test with your driving instructor can help you feel calmer and more supported. A short warm-up lesson beforehand also gives you time to settle in and ask any final questions.

The testing officer sits in the rear while your driving instructor remains beside you in the dual-control vehicle. This added support and safety can make the test feel less intimidating and help the appointment run more smoothly.

08

What to Expect on VicRoads Test Day

Your test-day booking begins with a driving lesson at Bundoora VicRoads. This may be your final package lesson or a one-lesson-and-test booking, giving you time to warm up, settle your nerves and go over final advice with your driving instructor.

You then present your documents and ID, return to the vehicle for the pre-drive check and complete stage one. If successful, you continue to stage two before returning to VicRoads to complete the process for your Victorian driver licence.

09

How Do You Know You Are Ready for the Drive Test?

Two things you can check for yourself. You feel confident behind the wheel, and the immediate termination errors and critical errors have gone out of your driving.

Your driving instructor gives you honest feedback on both, driving lesson by driving lesson, on Preston roads and on the testing routes themselves. When that feedback lines up with how you feel in the car, you are ready.

10

Depending on the student, driving instructor and booking type, driving lessons may include pick-up and drop-off from home, work, school, a local train station or the relevant VicRoads office. For focused test preparation, meeting at VicRoads is often the better option.

Driving lessons can focus on the areas you want to improve, including parking, lane changes, busy intersections, multi-lane arterials and general road confidence.

You have a genuine choice, which is unusual. Bundoora VicRoads at 8 Graduate Road is about 7.8 kilometres north east and roughly thirteen minutes, and it is the one we would book. Carlton VicRoads at 459 Lygon Street is a near identical distance south and takes closer to twenty minutes. Your driving instructor will confirm which suits you before your drive test is booked.

Time rather than distance. The two are almost exactly the same distance from Preston, but the run north east to Bundoora is around thirteen minutes while the run south to Carlton VicRoads is closer to twenty, because the traffic thickens the nearer the city you get. Seven minutes each way is fourteen minutes of your driving lesson.

If your days are already spent in the city. If you work or study in town, testing at Carlton VicRoads means preparing on roads you drive anyway and getting there is no extra effort on the day. The extra minutes matter less than being on familiar ground, so it is worth saying before you book.

About 7.8 kilometres, or roughly thirteen minutes north east out Plenty Road. It is a straightforward run and the quicker of your two options by a decent margin.

Yes for ordinary learner driving lessons, and pickup from home, work or Preston station is completely normal. For drive test preparation neither office is close enough for that to add up, so we would rather meet you at whichever one you have booked, or run a 90 minute driving lesson.

Away from them, then with them in stages. The first driving lessons stay in the residential grid between High Street and Gilbert Road, where there are no tram tracks at all. When you are ready we bring in one tram road at a time rather than both at once.

Where to stop behind one, that passengers step straight out into the road, and when you may move again. It is one of the parts of the Victorian road rules that people who learned elsewhere find genuinely unfamiliar, and Preston gives you plenty of practice on two different tram roads.

Heavy on the busy days and worth practising deliberately. Parked cars, people crossing and delivery vehicles stopping where they must make the streets around the market a proper lesson in reading ahead. Speeds are low, so it builds observation rather than testing nerve.

Yes, once the basics and the tram work are steady, and they come last. Both are multi-lane and busy through most of the day, so they teach gap selection, lane discipline and turning right across traffic. Plenty Road is the one you take out to Bundoora VicRoads, so it counts twice.

Yes, and from Preston it is the arrangement we would suggest whichever office you choose. The driving lesson runs immediately before the drive test on the roads the testing officers use, so a long drive is not sitting between your preparation and your drive test. It is also the best price we offer.

Usually not the driving. It is the Victorian road rules first, and here that means trams: tram stops, when you may pass and holding a lane beside one. After that it is the multi-lane arterials. We prepare you on the roads around whichever office you have booked.

It is one of the better suburbs in the inner north, and having two offices to choose between is a real advantage. A wide residential grid to start on, a market for observation, two tram roads and two arterials to progress to, all within a couple of kilometres.

The residential grid has ordinary kerbside parking with light traffic, which is where reverse parallel parking should start. Around the market and along High Street is the harder version, with people about and often a tram behind you, and we go there once the quiet streets have stopped needing any thought.
