No. The Exhibition Street office is a similar distance from Kensington and it does not conduct drive tests. It is open for plenty of other business, so it has not gone anywhere, but everyone testing from the city and the suburbs around it goes to Carlton VicRoads instead.

Because the streets between here and Carlton are narrow, busy and full of signals, so a short distance takes a long time. The ten minute rule goes on minutes rather than kilometres, which is what puts Kensington outside it. For drive test preparation that means meeting at the office or booking 90 minutes.

It is tight, and that works in your favour. The terrace streets are narrow with cars parked along both sides, so judging the space you actually have is the first thing you learn rather than the last. Learners who start here find most other suburbs roomy by comparison.

It is the main road through Kensington and the natural step up from the side streets. Steady traffic, turns across it and a good deal going on, without the lane count of the bigger arterials.

On race days, yes. Traffic around Epsom Road and Racecourse Road builds up considerably and people park where they normally would not. It is worth driving once you have the basics, because reading unusual traffic is a real skill, but it is not where a first driving lesson goes.
