It is an unusually good start and a poor place to finish. The streets around The Boulevard are quiet, curving and carry residents only, which is close to ideal for the first driving lessons and teaches road position early. What the suburb has no version of is busy traffic, so the later driving lessons go beyond it deliberately.

The streets around The Boulevard, including Wallis Avenue, Wilfred Road and the blocks between them. They curve and rise with the escarpment, so a beginner learns to hold a line through a bend from the first driving lesson.

They make it more useful. On a flat grid you can steer from corner to corner without looking far ahead. Here the road bends away and the ground drops towards the river, so looking through the bend and controlling speed downhill are habits you build immediately rather than months later.

It is the busiest road in Ivanhoe East and the main way out of it. Steadier traffic, and turns that need planning on a road that is rarely straight for long. It is the natural step up from the residential streets.

Because the suburb has no shopping strip and no multi-lane road of its own, and the drive test is conducted on exactly that kind of road. Staying inside Ivanhoe East would make you a very smooth driver on quiet curving streets and leave you unpractised at what is actually assessed.

On the residential streets where cars are parked along the kerb, and on a slope deliberately, because level parking is not the norm here. The busier kerbside parking a few streets away is the harder version and worth doing before test day.

Automatic. Driving lessons in Ivanhoe East are in a small dual-control automatic, and that is also the car you would sit the Bundoora VicRoads drive test in if your package includes it. An automatic licence covers you for automatic cars, which is what most people in Melbourne drive now.
