Glenferrie Road has trams down the middle, kerbside parking, students crossing between cars and delivery vehicles stopped awkwardly, often all at once. None of it is difficult after someone has shown you where to position the car, and it is much better learned with a driving instructor beside you.

The residential back streets between Burwood Road and the river. Short blocks with cars parked along both sides and local traffic only, so judgement of space starts in the first driving lesson rather than the tenth.

It is worth planning around rather than avoiding. Around class changeover the footpaths and crossings near the university get very busy and people step out between parked cars. We keep first driving lessons away from it and then use it deliberately, because reading pedestrians is exactly what the drive test pays attention to.

They are taught as a core skill here. Head checks before every lane change and a mirror check before opening a door become automatic quickly once someone explains why. On Hawthorn streets you will be sharing space with bikes on nearly every road, so it is better built in from the first driving lesson.
