No. Ringwood VicRoads does not conduct drive tests, although it is open and handles other VicRoads business. This causes more confusion in the east than anything else, because the office that does test is called Mitcham VicRoads and it also stands in Ringwood, at 93A Heatherdale Road.

The same answer. Burwood East does not conduct drive tests either, although it is open for other VicRoads business. It is the nearest office to a good many suburbs around Burwood, Ashwood and Glen Waverley, so the assumption is a fair one, but drive tests happen elsewhere.

It varies a lot across the east. From Box Hill or Blackburn to Mitcham VicRoads is a short run. From Lilydale or Rowville it is considerably longer, and from the southern or northern edges you are heading to a different office entirely. Gradient, mostly. Much of the east is built on rising ground, so hill starts, braking on a descent and reading a crest come into the first few driving lessons rather than being added later. Past Mitcham the roads also curve rather than follow a grid, which teaches you to look further ahead.

The wide post-war streets through Vermont, Wantirna and the Waverleys give a beginner the most room. The older grids around Box Hill and Blackburn are tighter but teach car positioning quickly. The hill suburbs out towards Warrandyte and Park Orchards are the most demanding and produce the most confident drivers.
