01New Learner Drivers

Driving Lessons in Ashwood for New Learner Drivers

Ashwood sits between two of the busiest roads in the south-east, so a first driving lesson does not start on either. Beginners work the quiet streets around Gardiners Creek instead.

From there it builds in an order: vehicle control and observation on the residential streets off Vannam Drive, then parking between real cars, then Highbury Road and Warrigal Road once you are ready for them rather than once the lesson plan says so. Driving lessons are one to one in a small dual-control automatic, which is what most learner drivers now sit the VicRoads drive test in. It is the same driving instructor and the same car right through to test day.

  • Complete beginners start on quiet Ashwood streets, away from the main roads
  • Private one-to-one driving lessons, with nobody else in the car
  • Progress at your pace towards your red or green Ps, not to a fixed schedule

From Ls to Ps in Ashwood: Driving Lessons as You Approach 120 Hours

Ashwood learner drivers approaching 120 hours, or past them, have two sensible offices to choose from for their Ps.

Mitcham VicRoads, on Heatherdale Road in Ringwood, is about 22 minutes from Ashwood; Heatherton VicRoads is a little closer at 11.6 kilometres but takes around 24. Whichever you book, the usual range at this stage is 3 to 5 focused driving lessons on its testing routes and the difficult intersections along them. Your driving instructor will help you weigh the choice, starting with a check of your current skill level, and between driving lessons we gauge your progress and give good advice on what to practise.

  • 3 to 5 focused driving lessons is the usual range at this stage
  • Mitcham VicRoads, about 13.4 kilometres and 22 minutes from Ashwood
  • Heatherton VicRoads is closer but slower, at about 24 minutes

03Overseas Licence Conversion

Overseas Licence Conversion in Ashwood

If you have driven for years somewhere else, the problem is rarely the driving. It is the Victorian road rules, and it is the inner suburbs.

Ashwood puts most of what you need within a few streets. The Burwood Highway means multi-lane traffic at speed. Warrigal Road means turns across it. The side streets mean giving way at unmarked intersections. Most overseas licence holders need fewer driving lessons than they expect.

  • Victorian road rules and unmarked intersections
  • Two to three, three to five or five to ten driving lessons, matched to your driving in Melbourne

04VicRoads Driving Test

Drive Test Preparation at Mitcham VicRoads

Ashwood sits about 13.4 kilometres north of Mitcham VicRoads, roughly 22 minutes, and that is where your drive test happens. Long enough that a 90 minute driving lesson, or simply meeting at the office, is the only arrangement that adds up.

Preparation covers the shape of the test itself: the pre-drive check at the car, stage one on the quieter streets with a parking manoeuvre or a three-point turn, then stage two on the busier main roads where lane changes are assessed. It also covers the things that end tests early, so you know what a critical error and an immediate termination error actually are before someone is sitting beside you marking them. Your driving instructor can be there on test day, in the same car you have been learning in.

Your Testing Office

Where Do You Sit Your Drive Test From Ashwood?

The short answer, and what it means for how your driving lessons are arranged.

01

Mitcham VicRoads

Learner drivers in Ashwood test at Mitcham VicRoads, 93A Heatherdale Road, Ringwood. Note the address: the office is on Heatherdale Road in Ringwood, not in Mitcham the suburb, and it is the one your driving lessons are built around.

Ashwood is a genuine border suburb. Heatherton VicRoads is closer at 11.6 kilometres but around 24 minutes, while Mitcham is 13.4 kilometres and about 22. Closest and quickest are different offices here, so either is defensible and your driving instructor will help you weigh it. Burwood East VicRoads, which is nearer than both, does not conduct drive tests at all, so it is not a meeting point we use.

02

About 13.4 Kilometres Away

From Ashwood it is about 13.4 kilometres to Mitcham VicRoads, roughly 22 minutes, north-east along the Burwood Highway and out through Vermont. Heatherton is nearer at 11.6 kilometres but takes about 24 minutes, because south means Warrigal Road and everything on it.

Two minutes is not much of a margin, so treat both as live options. Either way a 60 minute lesson picked up from home loses most of the hour to the round trip, which matters more than the choice of office does.

03

Pickup From Ashwood

Ashwood is well outside the ten minute mark whichever office you pick. Twenty-odd minutes each way is most of a standard driving lesson. Home pickup is sensible while you are still working the local streets. Once the drive test is the goal, meet your driving instructor at Mitcham VicRoads, or book 90 minutes so the travel does not come out of your preparation.

Your driving instructor stays with you on test day and you sit the test in the same dual-control car you have been learning in.

04

Your Driving Instructor

Our driving instructors live in the areas they teach in and specialise at the VicRoads office serving them, so your Ashwood driving instructor already knows the Mitcham VicRoads testing routes rather than learning them alongside you.

Every driving lesson is one to one in a small dual-control automatic, and it is the same instructor and the same car right through to test day.

06Local Driving Lessons & VicRoads Test Preparation

Learn on Ashwood Roads. Prepare for the Mitcham VicRoads Drive Test.

Ashwood is a pocket of quiet streets hemmed in by the Burwood Highway, Warrigal Road and Gardiners Creek. Almost everything a drive test asks for sits on its edges, and almost nothing sits in the middle, which is exactly the shape you want for teaching. The roads below are in the order your driving lessons take them.

New learner drivers: where we start

Not on the Burwood Highway, and not on Warrigal Road. First driving lessons stay on the residential streets around Vannam Drive and down towards Gardiners Creek, where the traffic is local, the corners are square and there is time to think.

Experienced learners: where we go next

Highbury Road next, steady suburban flow with roundabouts and schools along it. Then Warrigal Road, several lanes with turns across traffic that need setting up early, and the Burwood Highway, where the speed is higher and lane discipline stops being optional. The run out towards Vermont comes last.

The run to your testing office

Mitcham VicRoads is about 13.4 kilometres north-east, roughly 22 minutes along the Burwood Highway. Heatherton is closer but slower. Either way it is far enough that once the test is close we would rather start you at the office or run a 90 minute driving lesson.

Why Choose Alex Driving School in Ashwood?

For over 35 years, Alex Driving School has helped thousands of learner drivers and overseas drivers in Ashwood and right across Melbourne work towards their Ps or convert an overseas licence to a Victorian driver licence.

Our accredited driving instructors provide one-to-one driving lessons around Ashwood, preparation on the Mitcham VicRoads testing routes and practical feedback designed to build confidence, use lesson time efficiently and improve your chance of a first-time pass.

02

Parallel Parking Made Simple

Parallel parking is one of the most common reasons Ashwood learner drivers and overseas licence holders book a driving lesson before their VicRoads driving test.

Our driving instructors teach parking as clear, repeatable steps, including positioning, steering, reference points and observations. We also practise three-point turns and other low-speed manoeuvres so you can approach them with confidence instead of guesswork.

03

Overseas Licence Conversion Driving Lessons in Ashwood

Overseas drivers converting to a Victorian driver licence often need focused preparation rather than many driving lessons. If you have moved to Ashwood from overseas, driving lessons start on the streets around where you live and build out to the wider Melbourne roads, Victorian road rules and the Mitcham VicRoads drive test format.

Starting at Mitcham VicRoads in the automatic you have learned in means the hour is spent on the roads around the office rather than on the Burwood Highway. Same car, same instructor, and the time goes where it counts.

04

How Many Driving Lessons Will You Need?

New learner drivers generally begin with 5 to 10 one-to-one driving lessons before continuing supervised practice. Learners approaching or completing their 120 hours usually book 3 to 5 focused driving lessons for the VicRoads drive test.

Experienced overseas drivers commonly begin with 2 to 5 focused driving lessons, depending on their Ashwood and Melbourne driving experience. The first driving lesson helps your driving instructor confirm the most suitable preparation plan.

05

Should You Meet at VicRoads for Drive Test Preparation?

Once the drive test is the goal, meet your driving instructor at Mitcham VicRoads rather than at home in Ashwood. Twenty-two minutes each way is most of a lesson, and overseas licence holders and learners past their 120 hours get the most back from the change.

Meeting at VicRoads means more driving lesson time is spent on relevant testing roads. It also reduces wasted travel time and helps keep the overall cost of preparation lower.

06

Driving Instructors Serving Ashwood

People often search for driving instructors, driver training or driving teachers in Ashwood when they want patient and reliable help. Alex Driving School instructors are accredited, experienced and supportive.

The goal is not only to pass the drive test. The goal is to build safe habits that continue after the student receives a Victorian driver licence.

07

Why Use Your Driving Instructor's Car for the Drive Test?

Completing your VicRoads drive test with your driving instructor can help you feel calmer and more supported. A short warm-up lesson beforehand also gives you time to settle in and ask any final questions.

The testing officer sits in the rear while your driving instructor remains beside you in the dual-control vehicle. This added support and safety can make the test feel less intimidating and help the appointment run more smoothly.

08

What to Expect on VicRoads Test Day

On test day the booking opens with a driving lesson at Mitcham VicRoads, either your final package lesson or a one-lesson-and-test booking, so you warm up on the roads before the test rather than after the drive out.

You then present your documents and ID, return to the vehicle for the pre-drive check and complete stage one. If successful, you continue to stage two before returning to VicRoads to complete the process for your Victorian driver licence.

09

How Do You Know You Are Ready for the Drive Test?

Two things you can check for yourself. You feel confident behind the wheel, and the immediate termination errors and critical errors have gone out of your driving.

Your driving instructor gives you honest feedback on both, driving lesson by driving lesson, on Ashwood roads and on the testing routes themselves. When that feedback lines up with how you feel in the car, you are ready.

10

Finding Driving Lessons Near You in Ashwood

If you searched for driving lessons near me, driving schools near me or driving classes near me from Ashwood, Alex Driving School provides professional instruction across Melbourne suburbs.

Depending on the student, driving instructor and booking type, driving lessons may include pick-up and drop-off from home, work, school, a local train station or the relevant VicRoads office. For focused test preparation, meeting at VicRoads is often the better option.

11

Do You Need Refresher Driving Lessons?

Refresher driving lessons are available for licensed drivers in Ashwood returning to the road, rebuilding confidence or updating their skills for current inner Melbourne traffic conditions.

Driving lessons can focus on the areas you want to improve, including parking, lane changes, busy intersections, multi-lane arterials and general road confidence.

12

Occupational Therapist Driving Assessments

Driving lessons and vehicle support may be available for clients completing an occupational therapist driving assessment in selected Melbourne areas.

Availability depends on the assessment location, driving instructor and vehicle requirements, so contact Alex Driving School before booking to confirm whether we can assist.

Mitcham VicRoads, at 93A Heatherdale Road, Ringwood. It is about 13.4 kilometres and around 22 minutes from Ashwood. Note the address: the office is on Heatherdale Road in Ringwood, not in Mitcham the suburb, so set your navigation to the street rather than the name.

Either is defensible, which is unusual. Heatherton VicRoads is closer at 11.6 kilometres but takes around 24 minutes because south means Warrigal Road. Mitcham is 13.4 kilometres and about 22 minutes out along the Burwood Highway. Two minutes apart, so it comes down to which direction suits you.

No, and being the closest office is exactly why so many people assume it, Burwood East VicRoads stays open for other business but does not conduct drive tests. Your test will be at Mitcham VicRoads, or Heatherton if you prefer that direction.

About 13.4 kilometres, or roughly 22 minutes north-east along the Burwood Highway through Vermont. On a 60 minute driving lesson picked up from home that is most of the hour on the round trip.

Yes, and it makes sense early on because the local streets are good for building the basics. For drive test preparation we would rather meet you at Mitcham VicRoads, or run a 90 minute driving lesson, so the travel does not come out of your preparation.

Once you are ready for it. The Burwood Highway runs at higher speed across several lanes, so holding a lane and planning turns early both matter, and it is worth meeting with a driving instructor beside you. New learner drivers start on the quiet streets near Gardiners Creek.

On the residential streets around Vannam Drive, where cars are parked along both sides and the gaps are ordinary rather than generous. Reverse parking and three-point turns become routine by being done in real spaces.

Automatic is what most learners book, and driving lessons run in a small dual-control automatic. Manual can be requested on the booking form, subject to whether a manual driving instructor is covering Ashwood at the time.

Two or three driving lessons if you already drive in Melbourne regularly, because the work is knowing the Mitcham VicRoads testing routes. Three to five if Victorian conditions are still new to you.
