Can a Driving School Book Your VicRoads Drive Test?
No. You book the drive test yourself with VicRoads. Your driving school coordinates the date, the car and the lesson that runs into it.
No. We do not have privileges to book a drive test with VicRoads on your behalf. You book the appointment yourself, and we coordinate everything around it.
- Book with VicRoads online, by phone on 13 11 71, or at a Customer Service Centre.
- Book a package of lessons plus a test package with us, and after your first lesson your instructor helps you settle on a date.
- If your test is already booked, give us the date, time and office and the lessons are planned back from it.
This is the question we are asked most often once a package is paid for, and the answer surprises people. The drive test is a VicRoads appointment made against your own learner permit record, so it has to be booked and paid for by you. We do not book it for you. What we do is everything around the appointment: the preparation, the car on the day, and an instructor at the office with you.
This guide covers who books what, how to book with VicRoads, what has to be true before you can sit the test, why the first lesson is worth doing before you pick a date, and what happens if the appointment has to move.
Who books the drive test
You do. The drive test is a VicRoads appointment tied to your learner permit record, and VicRoads takes the booking and the fee from you directly. Driving schools are not given access to that booking system, so there is no version of this where we log in and take a slot on your behalf.
It surprises people because so much else about test day comes from the driving school. The lesson beforehand, the dual control car, the instructor waiting at the office: all of that is ours. The appointment itself is the one piece that stays with you, and it is the piece most likely to be left undone while everyone assumes somebody else has it in hand.
How to book it with VicRoads
VicRoads says the easiest way to book your drive test and pay is online. If you cannot book online, you can call VicRoads on 13 11 71 or go into a Customer Service Centre.
Have ready your learner permit details and a Visa or Mastercard. VicRoads applies a card payment fee to Visa and Mastercard payments, and the appointment is not held until it is paid.
What has to be true before you book
Booking a date does not make you eligible for it. Before you can sit the drive test in Victoria you need to:
- be at least 18 years old;
- have held a current car learner permit for the minimum period: 12 months if you are under 21, 6 months if you are 21 to under 25, or 3 months if you are 25 or older;
- have completed and declared 120 hours of supervised driving including 20 hours at night, if you are under 21;
- have passed the Hazard Perception Test;
- have an eligible car to use on the day.
On the day, bring your learner permit card or digital driver licence, proof of your 120 hours (the logbook or the myLearners app), and the car. VicRoads is firm about this: turn up without what is required, or turn up late, and you do not sit the test and the booking fee is not refunded. You book and pay again.
What we do instead
Coordinating the test with your instructor is the part that actually makes a difference, and it works like this.
- You book a package of driving lessons plus a test package. The lesson and test packages include the lessons, the instructor's car for the appointment and the instructor's support at the office.
- You complete the first lesson. Your instructor now has an honest view of the driving rather than a guess over the phone.
- Together you settle on a realistic date and the VicRoads office to test at. Your instructor knows which offices they cover and what the roads around each one ask of you.
- You book the appointment with VicRoads and send us the date, time and office.
- We lock the instructor's car and the lesson before the test into the calendar. On the day, that lesson runs straight into the appointment in the same car.
If your test is already booked when you come to us, nothing about that changes except the order. Give us the date, time and office when you book online and the lessons are planned back from your appointment at that office.
A test date chosen before anyone has watched you drive is a guess. A test date chosen after one lesson is a plan.

The car you sit the test in
Transport Victoria does not supply vehicles for drive tests, so the car is on you or on your driving school. A lesson and test package puts you in a small dual control instructor's car that is registered, roadworthy and already set up for testing, which is the simplest way to remove the question.
If you plan to use the family car instead, check it against the VicRoads requirements before you book. It needs current registration, working headlights, seatbelts and windscreen, a speedometer you can see, and L plates displayed. The one that catches people out: Transport Victoria says a vehicle fitted with an electronic or foot operated park brake cannot be used for the solo drive test, which rules out a good number of newer cars.
Two separate payments
The VicRoads fee and the driving school package are separate, and a package price never includes the VicRoads fee.
VicRoads charges for the drive test when you book it. At the time of writing the car practical driving test is $75.30, appointment and test together. Fees change, so check the current amount on the VicRoads fees page before you book. What we charge covers the lessons, the use of the instructor's car at the appointment and the instructor being there with you, and it is set out on our prices page.
If the appointment has to move
VicRoads asks for at least 24 hours' notice to change or cancel a drive test appointment. Give less than that and you can lose the fee, and as above, arriving late or without your documents costs you the test and the fee both.
Tell us as soon as you know, too. Your instructor is holding time for the lesson and the appointment, and a day's warning usually means the whole thing simply moves rather than falls apart.
The short version
- We do not book the VicRoads drive test for you. The appointment belongs to your learner permit record.
- Book it with VicRoads online, on 13 11 71, or at a Customer Service Centre, with your permit details and a card.
- Book a lessons plus test package with us, do the first lesson, then choose the date with your instructor.
- Already booked? Give us the date, time and office and we plan the lessons back from it.
- The VicRoads fee is separate from the package price, and at least 24 hours' notice is needed to move the appointment.

Common questions
No. We do not have privileges to book a drive test with VicRoads on anyone's behalf. The appointment is made against your own learner permit record and paid for by you. What we do is coordinate it with your instructor: you book a package of lessons plus a test package, and after the first lesson your instructor helps you settle on a date before you book with VicRoads.
VicRoads says the easiest way is online. If you cannot book online you can call VicRoads on 13 11 71 or go into a Customer Service Centre. You need your learner permit details and a Visa or Mastercard, and card payments carry a card payment fee.
Either works. If the test is already booked, give us the date, time and VicRoads office and the lessons are planned back from it at that office. If it is not booked, complete the first lesson and let your instructor see the driving before you choose a date.
VicRoads does not publish a rule about who fills in the online form, and families often do it together. The booking is still made against your learner permit record, and you are the one who has to arrive with the permit, the logbook or app and an eligible car. If anything about your record is unusual, ring VicRoads on 13 11 71 before you pay.
You need a car, and VicRoads does not supply one. A lesson and test package puts you in your instructor's dual control car, which is set up for testing. If you plan to use the family car, check it against the VicRoads vehicle requirements first: Transport Victoria says a car fitted with an electronic or foot operated park brake cannot be used for the solo drive test.
VicRoads asks for at least 24 hours' notice to change or cancel an appointment, otherwise you can lose the fee. If you arrive late, or without the documents, you do not sit the test and the fee is not refunded. Tell us as soon as you know as well, so your instructor's time can be moved.
Ready to book?
Tell us whether your VicRoads test is booked. If it is, send the date, time and office and we plan the lessons back from it. If it is not, we start with one lesson and your instructor helps you pick the date.
